Arthur Wardle
English, 1864-1949

British painter Arthur Wardle was one of the most recognized animal painters of the 19th and 20th Centuries. He portrayed an astonishing diversity of subjects with engaging naturalism and made his reputation with his large mythological paintings. He possessed a great command of various media including oil paints, pastels, and watercolors. He was elected a member of the Pastel Society in 1911.

With very little formal training, Wardle was a consummate natural talent. He is particularly known for his paintings of Terriers, although he probably painted every breed of purebred dog that existed during his day.

His best known painting The Totteridge XI, commissioned by famed breeder Francis Redmond hangs in the Kennel Club in London.
